Director’s Message

Welcome to the “Bangladesh Sericulture Research & Training Institute (BSRTI)” at Rajshahi - the only R & D institute in this sector of Bangladesh. Sericulture - a rural based, high employment generating, profitable enterprise plays a vital role in the socio- economic development of Bangladesh.

It was first established in 1962 as “Silk cum Lac Research Institute & Silk Technological Institute” at Rajshahi. After establishment of “Bangladesh Sericulture Board (BSB)” in 1978, it was placed under BSB’s control and renamed as “Bangladesh Sericulture Research & Training Institute”. After that by virtue of Law no. 13 of 2013 “Bangladesh Sericulture Board (BSB)”, “Bangladesh Sericulture Research & Training Institute (BSRTI)” and “Bangladesh Silk Foundation” were merged to form “Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board (BSDB)” to restore the past glory of the silk industry.

All three main activities i.e. Research, Training and Germplasm maintenance have been being maintained within the boundary of the main campus at Baliapukur, Rajshahi. Besides this a “Germplasm Maintenance Centre (GMC)” at Sakoa, Boda, Panchagarh and a “Regional Sericulture Research Centre (RSRC)” at Chandraghona, Kaptai, Rangamati, Chittagong Hill Tract are also under the control of this Institute.

Since establishment, BSRTI has made outstanding contribution for overall development of silk industry in Bangladesh. In line with Government’s sericulture policy for achieving higher output, BSRTI has been continuously striving for higher productivity through development of high yielding mulberry varieties and silkworm races. Major credits for these valuable and glorious achievements goes to the untiring efforts of dedicated scientists, technical staff and other personnel of BSRTI, working in different areas in mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing & sericultural engineering.

Besides, BSRTI has become a member of “National Agricultural Research System (NARS)” in 2012 through “Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC)” act 2012.

At present 23 research works are going on under an ongoing project named “Enhancement of Productivity through Sericulture Technology Development, Dissemination and Generation of Skilled Man Power (1st Revised)”. The 1st revision to the project was made through incorporation of five (05) more research works under special guidance of honorable Prime Minister. These five research works are mainly focused for development of climate resilient high yielding silkworm and mulberry varieties and development of standard management system for year round silkworm rearing and mulberry cultivation.  Up to May 2020 physical progress of these 23 Research works is 69%. The activities of these five research works was started from October 2019.

The Institute has also been producing trained manpower in the sericulture sector through various training programmes and till date 6396 candidates have completed their training successfully, who are serving the nation through sericulture development.

BSRTI has also been awarded several times for its outstanding performance as well as significant contribution in the field of sericulture research.
